Passenger train derailed in Assam, driver seriously injured
The engine of a passenger train (Guwahati-Siphung Express) along with five coaches derailed in Kokrajhar district of Assam in the early hours on Saturday leaving its engine driver seriously injured and causing minor injuries to some passengers.
The accident occurred between Salakati and Basugaon at 5.15 a.m. as the 55753 UP Siphung passenger train was about to cross a bridge, stated by Jayanta Sarma, Northeast Frontier Railway spokesman.
The train was running at a slow speed when the derailment happened, and that is why, officials say, there are no casualties.All the passengers of the train coming from Alipurduar in Bengal to Guwahati were transhipped from the accident site, Mr. Sarma said.
The engine driver was admitted to hospital immediately while the passengers with minor injuries were given first aid, the spokesman said.
As the railway track was blocked due to the derailment, other trains might be delayed, he added. Authorities are working to restore rail traffic which has been hit because of the accident.
